Recording acoustic guitar should be done in an average size room. For that purpose it is best to use our live room at the studio, that way the natural ambience could be captured properly. Although, one thing should be always kept in mind and it is that the place itself should be treated with proper acoustic panels like our live room, otherwise the ambience could ruin the recording. When it comes to recording an acoustic guitar we would always use two microphones, one of them is the condenser Audio-Technica AT 2031 which is placed towards the 12th fret of the guitar at a distance of 15-20 cm and the other one is the condenser Audio-Tehcnica AT 2020 which is placed against the hole of the acoustic guitar at a distance of 25-30 cm. This placement of the microphones is great for recording all kinds of ethno string instruments.
When it comes to recording electric guitars there are several ways that we can do that. We can use the live room or the soundproof vocal room. In the first case we would capture the natural ambience of the room plus the guitar sound while in the second we would capture the super tight clean sound of the amplifier itself without any ambience in the background. We would usually recommend using the soundproof vocal room because we can always add some processing to the audio material like room ambience, reverb etc. There is also a third way of recording electric guitar and bass using direct signal into the preamplifier and then in the post processing we could add any kind of software guitar emulation processor but this is rarely used when it comes to recording at a professional studio. Although, for us it doesn’t matter which way you would prefer since the artist chooses his own signature preset and how to record his instrument. We usually use Sennheiser E 902 and Shure SM57 when it comes to recording electric guitars and amplifiers.
When it comes to recording a bass guitar the things are quite similar. The one thing that is different is that we would usually use a different pair of microphones which are Sennheiser E 902 and Shure SM 57. The two microphones have to be placed very accurate in front of the speaker of the amplifier otherwise the polarity of the sound may swap and dephasing may occur which leads to unusable audio material and this is a very common occurrence when you are capturing sound via multi-mic recording. It is highly recommended to make a third channel for DI signal which captures the raw clean tone of the guitar and therefore it can be re-amped in order to experiment with different sounds or just to have it as a back-up plan.
The price for recording electric guitar and bass is 30 lv/15 euro per hour.
